Before experiment Setup:

• Turn off Location line in Netscape
• Turn off Directory buttons in Netscape
• Connect to training site (big screen and computers)
• Between experiments "expire" followed links in Netscape
• pencils and copies of surveys.

Welcome:

Thank you for participating in our experiment. The purpose of our experiment is to test on a new browsing hierarchical browsing tool called WebTOC. The tool is developed by David Nation from the National Security Agency. He is a visitor at the UM Human Computer Interface Lab. This is our final project for CMSC 434 Human Factors. The results of our study will be published at "http://otal.umd.edu/~bs11"

* Fill in the Preliminary Survey *

For both WebTOC interfaces:

• Title bar - Jumps to the indicate page
• Triangles - expansion and contraction of table of contents
• Expand button - expands the table of content to full
• Contract button - shows the layout for the homepage of the site
  

For WebTOC with GUI only:

• +/- in rectangles - expands and contracts the
• Size Bar
• - shows the amount of data in bytes on a log scale in four
• categories : Text, Image, Audio, Other(Video, Postscript)
• - clicking on it expands and contracts the table of contents
  

Timing:

When you think you found the answer,

1. click on the pause button.
2. Write your answer
3. Then ask one of us to verify
   

Introduction on the LC site:

American Memory collection is a multimedia presentation covering rare texts, images, and films on subjects like: Architecture, Baseball Cards, Civil War, Presidents, etc. We will be using the American Variety Stage and Conservation sites.

Training :
* Show the how the subject and author index are organized*

Tasks:

1)How many motion pictures are there in?

2)From what year to what year did Houdini first gain fame on his shows?

Don't use any search engine capability (only mouse, no keyboard)
