 The good: Sleeker,
better-organized interface; new privacy settings hide your IP address;
operates from behind a firewall. The bad: Big download; hogs
memory. The bottom
line: ICQ is still our favorite instant messenger, but it isn't
a big improvement over its predecessor, 99b. Don't bother with the upgrade
unless you're stuck behind a firewall.

Download ICQ's latest beta, ICQ 2000a, and you'll get a glimpse of
where the popular instant messenger is heading: not far, in our opinion.
The program is still our favorite instant messenger and sports a few cool
tweaks, including enhanced privacy features and an easier interface. But
these improvements don't add up to a must-have upgrade, especially
considering ICQ's mammoth 6.14MB download. Unless you need to get around a
firewall, try it at your leisure or stick with ICQ 99b.
