Abstract

This study examined the heretofore virtually ignored issue of mouse pad size, seeking to uncover the ideal dimensions for a mouse pad based on user performance. Subjects completed several interactive tasks with 3 different sizes of mouse pads, their performance and responses to a number of subjective questions recorded. No statistically significant differences were found in either clicking or dragging tasks, but a trend suggesting that larger mouse pads yield improved performance was observed in the dragging task. Subjective results indicated that the preferred mouse pad is one approximately the size of common commerically available mouse pads, but significant numbers of subjects had strong positive feelings about both the smallest and largest mouse pads.
