Study on Search Efficiency Based on Web Index Layout

Abstract

The most common use of the Internet is to find information. Approximately 90% of Internet users report they use the Web as a source of information. It is also inevitable that there will always be a percentage of users who are in a hurry to find this information. As a result, web developers have found innovative ways to organize the information on their web sites. One of these methods employs the use of frame sets as an index to a web site. The use of multiple frames allows the users to keep track of various levels within a site. Another method often used by developers features a tree structure, which stores the links of each level within a folder. As the user searches through a web site, they can keep track of their location relative to the entire site. The purpose of our experiment was to find out which interface - a multiple frame set index or tree-based index - produces faster and more accurate search results.
