The Department of American Studies holds various events throughout the academic year. In addition, American Studies regularly serves as a co-sponsor for events on- and off-campus. This area of the site provides information about such events, as well as links to other departments, programs and organizations that host events we think might interest you.

This area of the site also offers information about department and program news, such as recent conference presentations and publications by our faculty and students, as well as awards won by members of our community.

The Cultural In-Between as 'Another Country.

Dr. Neela Vaswani (a graduate of our American Studies Department) will be giving a talk/reading:"The Cultural In-Between as 'Another Country.'"

The talk will be based on her new book, "You Have Given Me Another Country" (2010), Neela's biographical/autobiographical exploration of her multicultural American/South Asian family - and the cultural spaces in between.

Rerouting Creativity: New Media Arts after the Ideology of Creativity

Alan Liu, Chair and Professor of English, University of California,
Santa Barbara (http://liu.english.ucsb.edu/)

In collaboration with MITH, the Digital Cultures and Creativity Honors
Program, and the Center for Literary and Comparative Studies

The College strategic plan ambitiously calls for ARHU to lead "the
nation in innovative applications of digital technologies in teaching,
learning, scholarship, and creative expression to open up new ways of
studying the past, comprehending the present, and imagining the future."

This Fall we welcome three new faculty members hired as the result of
the cluster search in digital humanities, media and cultures:  Jason
Farman (AMST), Hasan Elahi(ART) and Tara Rodgers (WMST).  And the
College launches its new program in Digital Cultures and Creativity
(DCC) in the Honors College.  Come meet your new colleagues, help kick off DCC, and explore the digital future of the arts and humanities with Alan Liu, one of the country's foremost thinkers about the digital
humanities, media and cultures.
