Massey, Doreen B. Space, Place, and Gender. Minneapolis: University of Minnesota Press, 1994.
Doreen Massey uses Space, Place, and Gender as a platform from which to argue for the geographer's contribution to the debates about power, knowledge, place and space. Massey's arguments are strategic and judicious, maintaining her intention to "put forward alternative readings" concerning place and space at this time. Situating her work in the arenas of feminist and Marxist scholarship, Massey is clear in her efforts to contextualize her work in relation to the social conditions of the moment. In one instance, she seeks to expound upon the connection between space and regional policy. Her more recent work leans towards making connections between the dynamism of place and socioeconomic geography--place as a changing factor in the minds of many depending upon their own loci. Although race is given very little treatment in the work, gender and class take center stage as categories of analysis. Massey's contribution to geography is not only enlightening, but also a challenge to those scholars who seek to engage issues of power, place, and space. [P. Williams]
