Noble, Allen G., ed.
To Build in a New Land: Ethnic Landscapes in North America. Creating
the North American Landscape. Baltimore: Johns Hopkins University Press, 1992.
A compilation of essays
by twenty different authors, this book explores the cultural landscapes of various
ethnic communities throughout the United States. The peoples range from
the Ohio Welsh to the French Creoles of Louisiana. Through the study of structures
and artifacts, these cultural-historical geographers have drawn out the life
patterns and defined the meaning of community for these often overlooked ethnic
groups. The focus is necessarily upon the landscape since many such communities
have left little in the way of traditional documentary resources for study.
