Not a scholarly journal in the strictest sense of the term, but does examine art history topics in moderate depth. Each issue carries 4-6 articles dealing w/art-historical issues, a "New Discoveries in American Art" section, and a detailed index for that issue. Covers all periods of American art and various kinds of art. Began publishing brief book reviews with volume nine. Does not publish bibliographies. Commercially oriented magazine that targets working artists. Articles feature contemporary artists and are not particularly historical or scholarly in tone. Regularly publishes reviews of books and art videos and annual Directory of Art Schools and Workshops. Also lists current exhibits at museums and galleries across the countries. Publishes occasional symposia on special topics, e.g. whether folk art ought to be studied as cultural artifact or as art. Section discussing upcoming books on antiques. "What, Where, When" provides useful compendium of exhibitions, lectures, and symposia by state. No bibliographies.

Each issue contains 2-3 articles of uneven quality (from brilliant to mediocre), 1-3 book reviews, regional office reports, and news of new acquisitions. Issues often devoted to one theme. Covers a broad range of art history topics, with emphasis on American artists. Approximately once per year a list of graduate projects will appear, containing the titles of M.A. and Ph.D. theses in progress at each reporting university. No bibliographies. Studies in the Decorative Arts is a semiannual interdisciplinary journal sponsored by the Bard Graduate Center for Studies in the Decorative Arts. The publication links the academic, museum, and commercial art worlds "without restriction to medium, cultural environment, historical era, or geographical region." The journal has a heavy emphasis on art history, but integrates issues of material culture involving economic, social, and political studies, as well as architectural history, anthropology, philosophy, and literature. The journal also includes book and museum exhibit reviews, research inquiries, and discussions of conservation and restoration issues. No bibliography.

Premier journal in American material culture; includes articles on both "high" and "vernacular" painting, sculpture, decorative arts, and architecture w/reference to the historical contexts w/in which they developed. Currently "scooping" JSAH in publication of the best scholarly work in American architectural history. Good source for theory. Each issue contains 3-6 articles plus about a dozen substantial book reviews and an annotated list of other recent books and catalogues. Indexed yearly by author, title, book review, and subject. On rare occasions, publishes theme bibliographies appended to articles.
