Published by the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress, this journal provides a forum for the exchange of ideas and information about folklore research. Aimed at both the general public and scholars in the field, Folklife Annual focuses on American folk culture but also includes articles about folklore in other countries. Because of the diversity of its intended audience, the articles tend to be general in nature and discussion of theoretical issues is minimal. Includes numerous photographs. No serial or subject bibliographies.
 
 
Folklore: The Journal of the Folklore Society, 1890--. 2/yr.

Published by the Folklore Society in London. Formerly titled Folk-lore Record and Folk-lore Journal, this is the leading British folklore journal. Though it publishes articles about folklore all over the world, its primary focus in folklore of the British Isles. Articles tend to focus on fieldwork and innovative research. Coverage of theoretical and methodological issues is less thorough. Comparative studies are frequent and there is particular emphasis on religious and supernatural folklore. No serial bibliography.

Editors emphasize original ethnographic research. Articles on teaching and/or professional concerns w/in the field of folklore are also frequent. Coverage of theoretical and methodological issues is minimal. Though the journal does not feature bibliographies on a regular basis, selected bibliographies are sometimes included with articles. Review essays are common and archival collections are sometimes listed. Once or twice a year, publishes an issue in its Bibliographic and Special Series. Focusing on a particular topic in folklore, these do not include bibliographies but frequently provide an overview of the special topic.
 
 
Folklore Women's Communication, 1973--. 3/yr.
Formerly Folklore Feminists Communication. Provides an "information outlet for women in the field and for those interested in the folklore of women." Provides announcements of the association, abstracts of papers read at the annual meeting, articles and bibliographies on folklore of women, discussion of courses in women's folklore, research in progress, and good critical book reviews.

Official publication of the American Folklore Society and preeminent American folklore journal. Publishes scholarly articles "focusing on all genres of the discipline and is geographically international in scope. Articles deal with new theories and techniques of the field and their subsequent debates." Good source of review articles. Each issue has sections dealing w/notes from the field, society announcements, critical book reviews and brief discussions of new titles, reprints. Separate "Record" and "Film Review" sections. Annual "Folklore Bibliography" has been discontinued.

Published by the Indiana University Folklore Institute, this journal is international in scope and is a particularly good source of information about folklore research in other countries. Articles present original research and investigate theoretical and methodological issues. Each issue features a review essay covering a particular topic in folklore. No serial bibliography.

Official publication of the Popular Culture Association and the most substantive journal in popular culture studies. Good on theory. Provides rather uneven scholarship on wide range of popular culture issues. Occasionally devotes issue to special theme, e.g., children's literature and culture, pornography, or ethnic theater. No serial or feature bibliographies. Publishes 15-20 long, signed book reviews.
 
 
Journal of Popular Literature, 1985--. 2/yr.

Published by BGSU. Considers literature in the broadest sense. Recent issues have examined Malamud's The Natural, Ladies Home Journal, and Erdrich's Love Medicine, for example. Contributions are of uneven quality.
 
 
Studies in Popular Culture, 1977--. 2/yr.

Focuses on popular culture, "however mediated: through film, literature, radio, television, music, graphics, print, practices, associations, and events--any material or conceptual conditions of life." Recent issues have featured pieces on "jocktalk in common speech," natural cosmetics, Benetton advertising, popular music, television series, and radio programs. Routinely publishes a section entitled recent books in which a dozen or so books are briefly encapsulated and evaluated.
 
 
Western Folklore, 1942--. 4/yr.

"Western" here does not refer to the American West but to that Greco- Roman- Euro- Enlightenment project thing. In other words, subjects pertain to Europe as well as to the Americas. Subjects are wide and varied: games, linguistics, literary criticism, folk studies--as they pertain to folklore. Jay Mechling is on the editorial board. Publishes articles, book reviews, and "Notes and Comments" section for reader response. The latter section has a high level of scholarly interest. No subject or serial bibliographies.
