Clio publishes interdisciplinary scholarship, especially "critiques of literature in which history or the philosophy of history function as an ordering principle; literary analyses of historical writing; and historiography that deals with the nature of history and thus literary knowledge and narrative." Articles are frequently on the "cutting edge" of historical theory. No serial or theme bibliographies. Indexed every two years.

Publishes in four areas: 1) theory of history, 2) narrativism, 3) historical methods, 4) and works in related disciplines relevant to the philosophy of history. The fourth issue of each volume is either a monograph or a bibliography of books and articles on the philosophy of history. Each issue has 3-4 articles and 4-5 book reviews. There is an occasional review of reviews that engages an older text and its critical reception. Scope is international and interdisciplinary and quality is excellent. Rare feature bibliographies. Has a "Books in Summary" section that consists of abstracts of new books in the philosophy of history prepared by the authors themselves. Indexes 5 volumes at a time and includes abstracts.

Publishes articles in intellectual and cultural (i.e. high culture) history: "the history of philosophy, of literature and the arts, of the natural and social sciences, of religion, and of political and social movements." Good on theory and historiography. Lists books received in each issue with a brief sentence on content. Indexed annually. Substantive review of one book per issue.
