These four journals cover mostly European topics, include mostly European references, and include articles with far more technical and statistical content than any others in this bibliography. None of the titles publishes bibliographies; all of them list books received at the journal's web site. Journal A publishes 8-10 articles per issue, with strong attention to business and commercial concerns, and 8-10 book reviews of works (mostly British, all English-language) of up to three years old. Journal B's articles are strong on strategic planning, national and local planning, and planning models and simulations; it publishes 6-8 articles per issue, with 8-15 book reviews of works 2-4 years old. Journal C focuses on economics and politics of public policy, policy and analysis, and policy research, with 6-8 articles and 4-6 book reivews of works 2-3 years old per issue. Journal D has a clear geographic emphasis, with an editorial board consisting mostly of geographers; it publishes 4-6 articles and 2-4 book reviews of works up to 2 years old in each issue.

JPER, published by the Association of Collegiate Schools of Planning for planning educators and practitioners, inclues no bibliographies. Its six or so articles per issue cover current issues in planning and planning education, with emphasis on planning theory and its treatment in graduate planning programs. JPER includes 3-6 book reviews per issue of books generally 1-2 years old. Of particular interest is a review of ten prominent European planning journals, some not readily available in U.S. research libraries, in vol. 17 (Winter, 1997) 182-5.

Devoted to publishing review articles and abstracts of recent literature in the field of city and regional planning. Each issue contains 1-3 refereed articles providing a comprehensive and critical evaluation of a particular subject; 300-400 abstracts of books, journal articles, research reports, and government documents. This serial bibliography, divided by subject, includes planning history and the history of cities and regions. Includes a subject index.
 
 
Journal of the American Planning Association (JAPA), 1979--. 4/yr.

Continues JAIP (1935-78). Among planning journals, JAPA alone attempts to catalogue the current literature in the field. JAPA, which claims to provide "high quality, cutting-edge research with practical applications," includes a "literature in planning" section in every issue with several hundred entries per issue encompassing books received, documents and reports received, and selected articles from 16 journals (citations only). Each section (books, documents, periodical articles) is subdivided into twenty categories; items are covered generally three to twelve months after publication. Each issue also includes 15 book reviews covering materials 1-2 years old, and four articles on a wide-range of planning topics, including environment and economy, planning theory, transportation, urban form and design, planning history, and politics and society. JAPA articles are central to professional planning discourse, and are frequently reprinted in compilations and used in graduate planning programs. No ongoing serial bibliography is published. Cumulative index approximately every five years.

JUH, representing the junction of urban studies and history, is "concerned about the history of cities and urban societies in all periods of human history and in all geographic areas of the world." 1-4 articles per issue are written by scholars in a variety of disciplines (urban studies, planning, history, geography, American studies, and others) and are not limited to U.S. subjects. Each issue has 3-4 articles and, occasionally, a review article. Sometimes publishes oral history interviews with reknowned urban history scholars. Does not publish feature or serial bibliographies. Indexed annually; indexes for 1974-83 cumulated in the Nov. 1984 issue.

Where JAPA is the American Planning Association's scholarly journal, this is the association's less technical monthly organ. Planning is not a peer-reviewed research journal, but does help readers stay current on planning issues with 4-5 fairly non-technical articles per issue, plus smaller matter including national notes of interest, a calendar, capsules of current events, and job listings. Two to three books (0-2 years old) are reviewed each issue, always by the same reviewer.

Newsletter for members of the International Planning History Society. Replaces Planning History Bulletin, the newsletter of the Planning History Group. The Planning History Group and the Society for American City and Regional Planning History have co-chartered the International Planning History Society.

No bibliographies. TPR covers town and regional planning (synonymous in British English with the American "urban planning") in "countries with advanced industrial economies and in newly emergent industrialized states." Subjects of the six articles per issue include urban management, strategic and regional planning, sustainable urban development, rural planning, coastal and estuary planning, local government and planning, transportation planning, planning history, and urban design. Articles and the twelve book reviews per issue cover mostly British material, some other European material, and a small percentage of American issues and texts. TPR often includes about six book notes (mini-reviews) in addition to the regular reviews; all books reviewed are less than two years old.
 
 
Urban Affairs Review (formerly Urban Affairs Quarterly) 6/yr.
No bibliographies. Each issue offers a feature essay with shorter response essays, and/or 2-4 articles. Contributors are generally scholars of political science, sociology, and geography, though the articles often share a political focus, with frequent attention also to race and class. Issues include 2-6 book reviews of works published in English, 1-2 years old; an occasional single short review essay appears.

Previously titled Urban History Yearbook. Published in the U.K. Includes a serial bibliography of recently published books and articles dealing with urban history. Aims to be comprehensive for materials published in the U.K. and includes extensive entries from France, Spain, and the U.S. Arranged by subject areas with an index of towns. Also reviews books, articles, and dissertations annually (in the issue not dedicated to the bibliography), arranged by pre-1800 and post-1800. Includes selected conference reports.

Previously titled Urbanism Past & Present. Bills itself as a "vehicle for the exchange of information, theories, and techniques relating to the development of urban communities over time. Focus is primarily on Canada, but does publish non-Canadian material when it deals w/comparative, methodological, or historiographic issues or topics. Contains a section for reports on work in progress, thesis abstracts, information on recent publications and notes on archival and other sources. No ongoing serial bibliography. Occasionally publishes annotated bibliographies on special topics.

Published in Scotland, Urban Studies provides an international forum for social and economic contributions to the fields of urban and regional planning. The journal has expanded to include increasing range of disciplines and approaches that bear on urban and regional problems. Contents include articles, notes and comments, and a comprehensive book review section. Regular contributions come from economics, planning, sociology, and population studies and statistics. Also publishes the occasional state-of-the-art article that reviews contemporary thinking on a given topic area and provides an extended bibliography of the topic. Issues include about 8 articles and 6-12 book reviews of works generally 2-3 years old, often a few "book notes" or mini-reviews. No ongoing serial bibliography. Indexed in December issue.
