American Studies 6XX: Communities of Care
Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual,
and Transgender Aging

COURSE DESCRIPTION
AMST 6XX is an introductory graduate course. It is an interdisciplinary
study of historical and social contexts of personal, cultural, and
political aspects of LGBT/Q elder care and aging. The course draws from
sources in a variety of fields such as Anthropology, History, Sociology,
Women's Studies, Public Policy, Disability Studies and American
Studies. Through readings, discussions and films the class will explore
approaches and analyses of aging within the lesbian, gay, bisexual and
transgender communities. The course will trace 'Bodies', 'Spaces',
'Technologies', 'Relationships', and 'Tools' to outline conceptual
frameworks for considering lgbt/q communities of care.
COURSE REQUIREMENTS & GOALS
Weekly reading assignments, contribute to weekly seminars, help frame
seminar discussions, autobiographical statement, weekly reading journal,
learning analysis, seminar paper.
