I am currently an assistant professor of English at Prince George's
Community College. There I specialize in teaching contemporary
American
literature. I also attmept to offer my students an understanding of how
literary and artistic movements often move in conjunction with one
another. To
this end, I often provide students with a glimpse of the work some
painters have done that correlates with what they are reading. Here is a
website that provides such art.
I am currently interested in the
way representations of
masculinity and disability intersect and may be able to teach us new ways
of
understanding social justice projects. I have recently developed a
desire to study sports as providing a space through which participants may
be able to resist oppressive structures, especially in educational
institutions. To that end, I am interested in examining how
public facilities such as basketball courts are maintained by
city governments in particular ways.
I continue my work in poetry and fiction, having recently published work in many academic journals. I am currently at work revising a manuscript Clean that works to understand how the landscape of America's heartland affects those who live in both its rural and urban areas. Many of the poems in the manuscript have been published in literary journals, including an on-line magazine, Liberty Hill Poetry Review. The impetus for this manuscript comes from my experiences, as a child, growing up in Chicago, and traveling to Dana, Indiana, where my grandmother lived and where Ernie Pyle was born. Below is a picture of the mural that stands in memory of Mr. Pyle on Dana's Main Street.
