CrISP Scholar
Presently, I am interested in studying the lives of Caribbean women,
specifically Haitian women. The transmigrant experience is of particular
interest to me. I am also interested in experiences of family in relation
to transnationalism. I feel that there is not enough scholarship being
done
on this group and I want to expand on the possible representations of
this
group as a whole. Issues of identity also come into play with
this group. Currently, I am a CrISP scholar for CRGE. My research
for the Consortium uses an intersectional approach to analyzing African
American women's lives within the categories of prison/incarceration,
sexuality and nation/migration. As a CrISP scholar I also help to
organize the monthly graduate colloquiums. I am also part of the
Intersections, Identities and Inequalities Research Interest Group at the
Consortium. At the University of Maryland I am currently taking Feminist
Cultural Criticism in Literature of the African Diaspora, Racial
Discourses
at the Nadir, and Current Approaches to American Studies and have
taken Advanced Feminist Theory, Life History Research and American
Studies 601. I come to American Studies with an English background
from the University of New Hampshire, where I concentrated in Race,
Culture & Power. My interest in ethnography stems from my experience in my
undergraduate institution where I worked on self-ethnography in my
creative non-fiction work. My self-ethography revealed that
migration has always been a part of my family history and that the
geographical separation of my family has had a major effect on the
cohesiveness of our
family lives.
