Ryan Shanahan
My research focus is teenagers engaging in street
prostitution. Specifically, I would like to work with girls in
Queensbridge, NY.
This page is a compliation of meta websites and other links I find useful
for teaching. This is always under construction, a work in progress
with infinite possibilities.
So here is a list of references thus far:
Colorlines Magazine
Colorlines is a quarterly magazine committed to social justice. I
reference this website throughout my syllabus as a place to obtain
articles on the prison industrial complex. The site is very easy to use
and I give students a direct link to an online article in the online
syllabus.
Advocate's Library on
Juvenile Delinquency
This website links you to four articles on juvenile delinquency and has a
particular article on teenage girls and gang violence.
Voice of the Shuttle
This is a theory-head website with lots of information, we will be using
this quite a bit throughout the semester and all students should have this
as a reference for working through various theorists. Specifically, we
will be looking at gender studies, legal studies, minority studies and
politics and government. Take time with this one, there is a heap of
infomration to plow through.
Critical Race Theory
Links
This website is full of useful links that will help students gain a
general idea of the main players in Critical Race Theory, one of the
dominant themes in the course.
Welcome to the
World of Michael Foucault
I know, I know, Michael Foucault...but, fear not, I have no idea what he
is talking about half the time either. So, we will be working through
this as a class, together. This website has a great cursory overview of
Foucault and some essays I would like us to look at regarding his theories
on the prison system. And, hopefully, if all goes well, by the end of the
semester I'll be able to spell his name without looking!
