How Do I Create a Podcast with Wimba Podcaster?

Print-friendlyPrint-friendly

You can create or import a podcast into a Podcaster repository quite easily.

Create a Podcast

Wimba Podcaster creates .mp3 files that are hosted on the Wimba Voice server.

  1. Access your Wimba Podcaster repository (via the Communications link or from within a content area).
  2. Click on the New button in the Podcaster toolbar.

  3. Type a Subject or title in the resulting Compose window.
  4. Click on the Record button to start recording your podcast.
Note: you can talk directly into the microphone that is built into your computer or you can use a standalone microphone or headset/microphone set.

The Audio toolbar also has playback, pause and stop buttons to help you manage your podcast recording. The digits in the upper-righthand corner indicate the length, in seconds and minutes, of your podcast recording.
  5. When you are done recording, click the Stop button.
  6. You can add a text component to accompany your recording by clicking in the empty text field at the bottom of the Compose window. This could be a textual transcript of your recording that would make the podcast available to those students with auditory impairment.
  7. Click on the Post button to make the podcast available in the Podcaster repository.
You will note that there is an Edit button on the podcast toolbar; however, the editing function simply enables you to add more audio content to an existing podcast. You cannot edit pieces of the recording.
  8. Once the Wimba podcast file is listed in the Podcaster list, you (and your students) can click on its link in order to listen to the audio in the preview pane at the bottom of the window.

Import a Podcast

Wimba Podcaster can import .mp3 and .wav files that are 10MB or less in size. You will not be able to import anything that is larger. In addition, you can import previously exported "Wimba Voice Board" (.wvb) files.

  1. Access your Wimba Podcaster repository (via the Communications link or from within a content area).
  2. Click on the Import button in the Podcaster toolbar.

  3. Browse your desktop or servers to which you are connected in order to find the file or file(s) that you want to import.
  4. An Import Progress window appears while the file is uploading.
  5. A confirmation message appears once the import finishes successfully.
