"Building 'Latinia': Constructing Cultural Identity Through Digital Stories"
In this talk, Professor Ana Patricia Rodríguez discusses the making of "Latinia, UMD," a collaborative, community-based digital storytelling project in one of her classes. For the project, the students reflected on their own mixed identities in the context of the changing Latina/o demographic in the United States. Whether one identifies as Latina/o or not, we are touched in some fashion by the growing presence and impact of Latin@ (Hispanic) culture in the United States. After deep reflection and writing on Latinidades in our local area, students produced multimedia products incorporated into a live performance of "Latinia, UMD," featuring the local performance artist, Quique Avilés. To tell their collective stories, student groups produced digital stories on film, Prezi, and good old live spoken word performance. Dr. Rodríguez will speak on the process of constructing, representing, and digitalizing stories.
All faculty and staff are welcome to join the discussion. This is a great opportunity for instructors to bring their ideas and questions to an open forum where we can discuss and learn from each other. No registration is required. Light snacks and refreshments will be provided
