Getting Started with Wordpress

Now that you have your Wordpress blog, follow these steps to get started customizing and publishing it.

Step 1: Change your blog's title
1. Go to the Settings tab in the administrative back-end
2. Click in the field for blog title, and change the blog title.
3. Click in the field for the site tagline. Add a brief description of your site.
4. Click save changes

Step 2: Change the look of your blog
1. Click on the Design tab.
2. You will automatically be in the themes section
3. Click on the various themes (there are approximately 15 to choose from)
4. If you like the theme you chose click on the Activate link in the upper right hand corner
5. If you don't like the theme click on the x in the upper left hand corner to see another choice

Step 3: Set the viewing permissions for your blog To make your blog or site private
1. Go to the Settings tab
2. Click on the Privacy subtab
3. Click on one of the the five options for controlling external access to your space (Keep in mind, however, that if you restrict your privacy settings to members of the blog.umd.edu community, registered users, or administrator only, the RSS feed will be disabled.)

Step 4: Create a Post
1. Log in, click on the Write tab.
2. Click in the the title field. Make your title descriptive.
3. Click in the post field start typing!
4. Click in the tag field and add searchable keywords.
5. Click in the categories section (See below)

Step 5:Designate categories
1. Click on the + Add New Category link. A text field will appear with a parent category drop down menu
2. Type in a category
3. Use the drop down menu to choose a parent category
4. Click the add button
5. Check the box next to the category you want the post to appear in
6. You can label it with more than one category as well. Just check more than one box.

Not ready for your post to be seen by the public? No problem. Click ???Save??? instead of ???Publish, and you will be able to edit it later by clicking on the ???Manage??? tab on your administration panel. |
