Live Streaming
Overview
As part of Division of IT 's continuing commitment to serve the campus and its academic endeavors, we provide the capability to stream live events or lectures. Streaming media makes content easily accessible to several locations at once.
Streaming technology works by allowing viewers to watch video while it is still loading on the backend. The servers providing live streaming at Division of IT are Helix streaming server and Darwin streaming server. Users can broadcast live lecture or event using either method. Below are the highlighted differences between using the two options.

Steps of Live Streaming
Option1: Using Real Producer on a PC
Steps to set up live streaming with Real Producer on PC.

Under the Input tab, select Device on the left, under the Input tab. Next to Audio and Video, select the audio and video devices that are connected to your computer.

3. Go to the Output tab, and select RA/RV by clicking on the plus (“+”) button.

4.Click on the plus sign under the Output tab, and select Helix Push Server in the Server Template window, then click on the Add to Job button.

5. After adding a stream job, double-click on the highlighted job illustrated below to configure network setting.

6. In the Destination Sever window, make sure Helix Push is selected for Server Type. Then, type in the Stream Name, Server Address, Username and Password to start broadcasting. That information will be provided to you when your live streaming request has been approved. Note that the username and password are the live streaming account that we will give, not your Directory ID.

7. To view your live streaming video, use this URL
rtsp://streaming.umd.edu:8080/ramgen/broadcast/YourStreamName.rm
8. Link to your ELMS course (optional)
Use the external tool in ELMS to link the live streaming media to your course.

Option2: Using QuickTime Broadcaster
Steps to set up live streaming with QuickTime Broadcaster on a PC:
1.Download QuickTime Broadcaster (free)

2.Launch QuickTime Broadcaster and Modify Network setting
Select the correct audio/video devices that are connected to your computer.
Make sure to type in the same information in the Network Settings as illustrated below for Transmission(Manual Unicast), Address(128.8.11.136), Audio Port(5432), and Video Port(5434). After finishing step 3 and step 4, you can click on the Broadcast button to stream
your video/audio.
3.Audio and Video Setting (optional)
Under these tabs, you can customize output resolution, compression method, output quality, and data rate. If you are not sure which is the best choice, leave the setting as it is or consult with us at learningtools@umd.edu
4.Generate the SDP (Session Description Protocol) file
This files contains type of media, transport protocol, coding format, sources IP address, port information. Users will call this file when they view the streaming video through their computers.
To create the SDP file in QuickTime Broadcaster, go to File, and select Export SDP. Save the file on your computer. You will need to upload it to the live streaming server later.

5. Upload SDF file to the streaming server
Go to http://otal.umd.edu/request-form
Or contact us at learningtools@umd.edu to request a streaming media space if you have not done so.
Use a WebDAV client to upload the SDP file to your space on the streaming media server. PC users can use WebDAV (http://www.helpdesk.umd.edu/software/webdav/), and Mac users can use CyberDuck (http://cyberduck.ch/).

6.View the streaming video
Use the following URL to view the broadcast video

7.Broadcast live lecture via ELMS (optional)
If you want to broadcast your video in ELMS, you use the “External Tool”, and paste the URL:
