The OTAL web server was set up to support classes that are creating group or class web pages; and, to support those who need web space for class or research needs that require cgi, perl, php, or other programming needs not easily done in Division of IT's Web Hosting environment. It has been used in recent years by courses to try out new Web 2.0 technologies, or even to build their own. Wikis, blogs, web surveys, online museum tools, and more have all been used on OTAL.

The course projects tend to be semester-based but may extend beyond that period of time. Faculty or graduate students may request space with the understanding that research projects must be renewed on an annual basis to maintain the space.
