What is iTunesU?
iTunesU is a special subset of the Apple iTunes store that enables academic institutions to make audio and video content available for subscription and download. Contrary to popular misconception, you do not need an iPod to interact with iTunes content; anyone with the iTunes player installed on their computer can listen to or download content from the iTunes store.
The University of Maryland hosts podcast media in two iTunesU locations in order to share digital content with two different constituencies. The public iTunesU face for the university is available through the Apple iTunes Store [1]. College and department administrators can work with the university's Office of Communications, Web Marketing group, or can contact itunes-admins [2] in order to get assistance with posting public content.
The iTunesU Academic site was established for those instructors or administrators who wish to host instructional media in a less public environment. Access to content hosted on iTunesU Academic can be limited to the roster of a specific course or to the University of Maryland College Park community.
Instructors can use a set of iTunesU tools to manage their Academic Site course spaces by controlling access, defining the look and feel, and uploading media content.
Getting Started with iTunesU Academic Site
To begin, request a course space on the iTunesU Academic site server. Designate the level of authenticated access that members of the University will have to the content. You can start by limiting access to just the membership of your course; but, at any time, you can make the content of the course space available to all members of the University community.

Managing Your Course Space on the iTunesU Academic Site
You can manage the look of your iTunesU course space in terms of a thematic image and organization of "album" tabs. In addition, you will either upload media content directly to the iTunesU Academic server or upload content to podcast.umd.edu and then create a link to it from your space on the iTunesU Academic server.
