I dont understand his fascination with viruses and biology.

And computer programmers are always looking to give programs more and more 'living' functionality- true intelligence, vision, robotic mobility, etc.
A biological virus is basically nothing but a tiny bit of code (DNA) that tells a normal cell how to build the virus itself. That's ALL it does; it doesn't eat, doesn't move in response to stimuli, it can't even reproduce by itself. It's so basic it's an open question whether they can actually be called 'alive'. It's very much like a spontaneously arising biological computer program.
