Introduction Hi! I am the designer and instructor for the this on-line course, Paulette Robinson. I am an Assistant Professor in Instructional Technology at Towson University. I currently teach graduate courses in Instructional Development, Web-based Instruction and Distance Education. My research, writing and professional presentations are focused on the design and use of web-based instruction (see http://www.towson.edu/~probinso/resume.html for specific professional details). Approach to Instruction My personal approach to instructional design is constructivist, which I incorporate into all of my course designs. I believe that students learn best through the application of what they learn to their own professional lives. Therefore, students are assessed in the class on discussion participation and projects, and not exams. I support students in their learning with frequent and comprehensive feedback. I believe in an iterative approach to any assignment. Students can rewrite and rework their assignments to improve their grades up until the last day of class. I find that students often learn best through their errors. Group work is a large part of my classes. I find that groups teach each other skills as well as offer differing approaches to a problem. This added complexity to any problem or project provides students with alternative perspectives and solutions that an expert often gains through experience. Representing Information in New Ways I have been intrigued by the possibilities that the Web provides to represent information and instruction in new and different ways. I have experimented with representing scholarly writing by taking advantage of the spatial and multimedia possibilities of the Web. My dissertation is an example of this thought process.
