Participation:

Participation is critical in an online classroom.  Therefore, it is an important part of your grade.  You are expected to participate in all of the student activities and classroom assessment techniques.  You will also be expected to respond to the discussion questions posed by the instructor for the week.  You are expected to respond to at least one other fellow classmate's response to the weekly questions.  Responses should be thoughtful and informed by the readings (not an academic verbatim citing from the readings or summaries of the articles, but your analysis and reflections).  You can pose additional questions, use multimedia, or suggest interesting web links that relate to the topic being discussed.

Journal reflections will be posted to your individual conference which is password protected.  The conversation is between you and me.  The reflections are a record of your learning and should be based on your impressions, experiences, or struggles with the reading sources (e.g., books, articles, web sites, or fellow classmate discussion items).  I am not looking for a summary of the readings, but critical reflections and questions related to how you are weaving the materials together within an electronic environment.

The group activity and classroom assessment project is the opportunity for you as a group to plan, adapt and facilitate an online activity and use a classroom assessment technique (CAT) from Angelo and Cross.  A group schedule will be posted online.  Your group should be signed up for its topic, activity and assessment by midnight the end of the third week.  Choose a spokesperson to email the instructor on behalf of the group.

The group has three initial decisions to make:
 

1)   Select a topic from the lists of topics suggested under each session in the syllabus.  If the group is interested in a topic not listed but related to the session, please contact me before you proceed.  The topic you choose will determine the date your group will present their activity.  There will only be one group scheduled per week.  The schedule will be determined on a first come first served basis.

2)   Select an activity that supports your topic.  The list of activities are only a suggestion.  If you would like to adapt a technique that is not on the list, but will support your topic, please contact me before you proceed. Each group must select a different activity.  This is the opportunity to try different pedagogical techniques to see how they work in a computer conference.

3)   Your group must select a CAT from Angelo and Cross to administrate in conjunction with your activity.  As with the activities, each group must select a different CAT.

Activity Tasks:

1)   Activity and assessment plan (emailed to the instructor).
 

a)   Details of how you plan to implement the activity and assessment.
b)   How do these tools enable learning the content?
c)   What were the challenges in planning for this activity and assessment
       for the class?
 
2)   Facilitate the activity and assessment.

The group will open a conference of conferences for their activity and assessment.  The activity starts midnight Sunday night and ends the following midnight on Sunday.

3)   Individual Analysis (emailed to the instructor).

a)   Evaluate the group process.
b)   Describe your experience in the process of planning and facilitating an
       activity and assessment.
c)   And analysis of the strengths and weaknesses of the activity and assessment.
d)   How did the assessment inform you as one of the facilitators.

4)   The group posts a summary of the assessment results for the other learners to
      read.  (Post the assessment to the Assessment conference.)

5)   The group contributes an annotated bibliography of five resources that are not already
       included in the list of resources.  Email the resources to the instructor.  They will be
       included in a shared class bibliography on the course web site.

Web page Instructional Design Project
 

The web page instructional design project is the opportunity for you to design an instructional event (e.g., seminar, lecture, course, workshop, etc.) that draws together the topics discussed in the course and suitable for delivery in a WCC.   It should include:  assessment elements, learner description, goals and objectives, bibliography of sources to support the instruction, activities, syllabus or schedule of events, etc.  The project will be assessed on its application of principles presented in the course, clarity, and use of multimedia and hypermedia as an integrated element of the instruction.  The project is due to be posted to your class web page the first part of the 11th week.  Ten minute presentations of student projects will be scheduled the last class meeting.  Computers, projection units, and web connections will be available for you to show your instruction.
