Children's Programming
There were a number of different programs which were aimed at the younger audiences. These varied from Adventure stories and serials to programs of stories and songs led by a host or hostess. The children’s programs were generally on air in the afternoons after school or on Saturday mornings.

The after school broadcasts included programs such as comic serials, with heroes like Buck Rogers, Superman and Captain Midnight. These serials typically lasted fifteen minutes and there could be between 3 to 5 of them in a row. These serials were generally sponsored by cereal companies.

During the afternoons and on Saturdays there were more programs aimed at this younger audience. Although unlike television now, most of the plays and various things that were on the radio in the evening were intended for family entertainment. Therefore there wasn’t such a great distinction between the programs, and children could listen in the evenings to the same shows as their parents.

The table shows the various programs aimed specifically at children, these are more the ones intended for very small children.

Sam Golgeier has done a study of the various children’s programs which were around in the 1930s. He comments that the radio of the 1930s and 1940s was similar to modern television, in terms of its entertainment value to children.
