Sports on the
radio
(1937-1945)
This
project makes use of one of
Fleming’s topics in her five step operation of an artifact study. The operation
that this exercise utilizes is Cultural analysis, that is, the study of an
artifact to determine it’s relation to the culture during it’s time. The other
four operations aren’t as relative when studying a theme centered analysis.
The radio was a main source of entertainment in the 1937s-1945s. Not only did
it entertain by the use of music but the radio industry also broadcast sporting
events. The use of the radio brought a totally new experience of sports to the
fan in the 1940s. They no longer had to travel miles away to see a live game,
or wait until the next mornings paper to see the results. The game was played
right there in there home with the help of some imagination and the announcers
play-by-play descriptions. The broadcasting of sporting events mostly catered
to adults and young men, although children also enjoyed the sport programs.
These are a few of the sports broadcast on the radio in the
1940s.
