Eureka
Eureka was founded by Fred
Wardell in 1910. Sensing the potential of the vacuum cleaner, the Eureka was
immediately put into mass production. There were several different models of
the Eureka including a hand held cleaner which could come as an extended model
that enabled the user to stand while vacuuming. The cleaner became so demanding
that at one time "there was reported 400 branches and 5,000 salesmen."11 The company was soon swamped with orders for
the
cleaner and Wardell was forced to build another plant. World war II froze
further developing plans for the company but in 1945 when the war ended the
company resumed production. Only now the company began to produce additional
electrical appliances like the iron which, had limited success on the market.
The Eureka vacuum still remained their primary sales item.
