Regina
Not all cleaners were practical. "However, one of the most unique, and as
it turned out, extremely practical and popular devices to appear is the
Electrikbroom introduced in 1945 by the Regina Corporation."1 There were many companies that developed the
broomstick style vacuums but Regina produced the most popular model of its
time. A number of these broomstick cleaners can be seen on Starks vaccum museum
page.The
Regina cleaner, developed by Ward Leathers,
weighed only a third as much as the ordinary cleaners produced in 1945. This
allowed it to be hung up like a broom and take up little closet space. This was
helpful in maintaining order among the cluttered cleaning utensils within tight
closet space.
The Regina vacuum cleaner was constructed out of a steel material with a
canvas bag used to collect the debris. This proved to be a
effective design for its time. When Regina viewed Leathers prototype, the
Electrikbroom was quickly put into mass production requiring over 100 employees
to work the assembly line.
