Project Three: Women in Greenbelt
By: Angela Willard
Welcome to Greenbelt
Greenbelt has made its mark in Maryland history. During the
Franklin D. Roosevelt Administration three areas in the United States were
chosen to serve as "green towns". Greenbelt happened to one of the lucky
three sites considered for development. These new communities were
initially set up to create jobs during the depression, but they became a
haven for economically disadvantaged families who wanted a pleasant
environment to live in.
In 1935 the groundbreaking took place and the construction of what
would become known as Greenbelt occurred. Initially the people who lived
in Greenbelt were defense workers during World War II. Once the war ended
many other types of people moves into Greenbelt. Right from the beginning
the inhabitants of Greenbelt were excited and motivated to run the
community in a cooperative fashion. Out of all three "green towns" Greenbelt
was the only one to effectively use a cooperative system. Included in
this idea of a cooperative system are the ideals of community, family, and
togetherness. The whole idea of a cooperative community is what prompted
many people in the community to start clubs and organizations. One of the
earliest of these organizations is the Women's Club of Greenbelt.
