This is a little tough to analyze and discuss because
music can have
and it does have different meanings for different people. Since we cannot
go back in time and question every individual resident, we will have to
make a few assumptions on what the purpose and meaning of the music was
in
Greenbelt. From what we have seen in the previous section, Music in
Greenbelt, it is not wrong to say that music was in essence a
bringing-together tool for the community. It joined the community in more
ways than one. It required people to interact with each other - discuss
vocal arrangements for upcoming recitals. It required the community to
compromise - decide what is going to be done and how for the Christmas
gala. It required people to know something about music. It not only served
as a holding together tool, it also served as a means of music education.
The ballet troupes that came to town - their purpose was to raise
awareness for the arts. The most important thing that music meant in
Greenbelt, I think, was the fact that it was a symbol of love and
friendship. All the musical events that took place in Greenbelt during the
1930s were very successful according to reports in the Greenbelt
Communicator. This also says that the community was supportive of each
other. Music, as it has always been, served as a means of relaxation. It
gave people a chance to break away from the regular day - it is much the
same as going to a movie and letting your imagination run wild. So, music
was an important part of the Greenbelt community and we can only guess at
the importance that it might have held.
