Coffee
Brands

In the 30's and 40's there were many different brands of coffee to
choose from. In Maryland in this era the most popular brand was Eight O'clock Coffee. This was the
largest
selling brand in the world in the thirties and forties. In the thirties
this brand was only available on the east coast and some parts of the
midwest. Even with that handicap Eight O'clock Coffee still was
responsible for twenty-five percent of the nations coffee business2. In
the forties when the growing trend in coffee manufacturing was going to
vaccuumed packed ground coffee, Eight O'clock beans were still ground at
the stores. Since the early 1920's, coffee was available in a vaccuum
sealed can3. The most popular brands found in
this period in Maryland were Brown
Gold and Maxwell House. Both of these are packaged by the Nestle
Corporation. In 1938 nestle made a break through in coffee manufacturing,
when it found a way to freeze dry the coffee. This allowed the coffee to
be stored for much longer amounts of time4.
In 1942 Maxwell House was sent to the soldiers in World War II and there
was coffee hoarding in the United States which led to rationing of
coffee5. The coffee that was commonly found in
this area came from either Arabia or Columbia. Maxwell House and Brown &
Gold were grown in Columbia,
while Eight O'clock Coffee is made produced in Arabia.
