The image of the single working woman was first brought to television
by the comedic actress, Mary Tyler Moore.
As the first single working women in a title role, she presented the idea
that a women does not nessecarily have to be married and dedicate her life
to her
family to reap all of the pleasure that this world has to offer.
The Mary Tyler Moore Show, which "has been one of television's most successful situation comedies (MTM 6), details the life of Mary Richards (the character played by Mary Tyler Moore) and her coworkers at the WJM news station. Mary, who actually acts more like a secretary or decorator, is the assistant producer of the news station. With a never-ending smile and a "Dear Abby" motherlike quality, she spends her time sheding light on all of the problems of her fellow workers. Although The Mary Tyler Moore Show does seem to add some "happiness" and "joy" to the television world, some of the messages hidden within the program are less than positive.
The episode that I chose, entitled "Lou and That Woman", provides the viewers with some of the images that were present in this television show.
