An Analysis of Doll Furniture
The last toys that I will analyze are the appliances and furniture you
see below. Toys such as these were probably used with dolls in a doll
house. They were just furniture for the doll house. There is a bathroom
set, kitchen set, as well as bedroom furniture and the like. Little
analysis is necessary. They are basically the same objects that would be
found on a larger and more realistic scale in homes of the Depression
era, particularly in Greenbelt as they closely ressemble the government
issue furnishings of the museum. These toys are probably made of wood,
plastic, medal and ceramic or porcelain. They would not have been
terribly difficult to mass produce, nor would they be very expensive as
the materials and labor would have been quite economic. That is how one
sees the influence of the Depression in this artifacts. Greenbelt may be
seen in two respects. First, it ties in to the gender specific toys
common in Greenbelt. Secondly, they reinforce (or reflect) the importance
of home life and domesticity in the context of Greenbelt.
