American Studies 205
Material Aspects of American Life

This is a page dedicated to my American Studies 205 class, which is held in the AT&T Teaching Theater. I will have to admit that when I first learned that the majority of this class would be on computers, I was a little frightened. In fact, I guess that you could say that I was downright petrified of the fact that I would be expected to use a computer for something other than finding books at the library. I had never really even used a computer previous to this class (I just learned how to double click on something two weeks prior to the class). Despite my fears and anxieties, I think that I pulled through and managed to learn a lot about computers, as well as "Material Aspects of American Life." I even think that this will become my new hobby.

Throughout the semester, which quickly become my learning ground for computer skills, we looked at the cultural meanings of various artifacts, and how each of the artifacts relate to different ideas or periods of history, such as college life in the 1990's, American history, fashion trends, or the history of Greenbelt, MD.

These stories of American history are told through the following projects:

Project 1
Jake the Wild Thing
This essay is an analysis of my "Where the Wild Things Are" doll, as it relates to college life in the 1990's
Project 2
Field to Factory:
Afro-American Migration (1915-1940)
This is a critique of the an exhibit at the National Museum of American History
Project 3
Tattoos:
Artifacts of Antifashion
This is an analysis of tattooing, as it relates to American culture and fashion in the 1990's
Project 4
Depression Glass
This is a look at depression glass, as it relates to the history of Greenbelt, MD.
