Above is pictured a photo of a frieze which depicts a farmer holding a sheaf of wheat, eyeing and being eyed by a laborer with a lunchbox. Behind the farmer is a barn-like structure, and behind the laborer is a factory with smoke coming out of a series of chimneys. Below, the caption reads, "INSURE DOMESTIC TRANQUILITY."

The men's stony expressions lend this scene some unrest. It is not clear what these workers are thinking, whether they are friends or are angry with each other, but the author's intent is evident. What this this scene does demonstrate is the tension of the meeting between the industrialized North and agricultural South.
