Above is pictured a photo of a frieze which depicts a man leaning on a
shovel, a woman with a
child, and a boy leaning on a baseball bat. A line of five militia
men, their faces hidden, are marching toward the people. Below, the caption
reads, "PROVIDE FOR THE COMMON DEFENSE."
The man and boy are looking toward the military men
with serious expressions on their faces. Interestingly enough, the
woman is not facing toward the marching soldiers like the man and
boy. Rather, she is facing full forward and seems to be smiling down at
her child.
The roles of men and women in the 1930s were very fixed, and meticulously
defined in the
planned community of Greenbelt. The woman was expected to stay home and
rear the children,
while the man had to work to support his family.
This frieze seems to promote the idea that men should aspire to serve
their country, and women should be inspired to persue a life of raising
children.
