Youth Organizations

There were four main youth organizations in Greenbelt, other than the before-mentioned Junior Citizens Association, that were established in the early years of the city. They were the Boy Scouts of America, Girl Scouts of America-Troop no. 17, Greenbelt Senior Troop of Girl Scouts, and Little League.

The two Girl Scout troops of Greenbelt were formed on the same principles, to provide good wholesome fun activities for the girls of the troop. Troop 17, however, was composed of girls between the ages of 10 and 14 years old while the Senior troop was of girls between the ages of 14 and 18. They both met weekly and instilled the Girl Scout ethics and morals which the city of Greenbelt wanted their young ladies to have.

The Boy Scouts and Little League were established for the boys of Greenbelt to engage in wholesome activities also. The Boy Scouts were based on the outdoors, especially survival and camping skills. The troop had to go on many trips and learn about nature and how to become a good man through them. The Little League however focused on sports and competition. The players learned how to win and lose and how to react each way. They also gained coordination, strength, agility, and fitness through this youth organization.
All of the youth organizations were established in Greenbelt to help to guide the children in a healthy direction full of wholesome fun and healthy activity. It gave them things to participate in while learning important lessons to use later in life.
