The American Legion Auxiliary, Greenbelt Unit No. 136 was established on February 28, 1939. The organization, which still exists today, has been heavily decorated with awards over the club's history for its involvement in community projects dealing with youth, senior citizens, and civic improvement. The organization was extremely involved in the war effort; it ran wartime sewing centers for the American Red Cross, and was active in the Greenbelt Cookie Jar, a jar that held seventy dozen cookies baked by the women's organizations of Greenbelt and was sent to the soldiers at various Forts and Bases in the area (Williamson, 121).
