Hence, the
construction of Greenbelt has characterized the technoburbian ordeal.
Through the employment of over thirteen thousand workers, Greenbelt has
become a beautiful, self-sufficient community, filled with stores,
businesses, and shops of its own. The Greenbelt project was a success, for
it accurately provided "work relief, low-cost housing, long
term community planning, and subsistence farming"
(Greenbelt).Though
Robert Fishman argues for city life, I think a suburb needs to be
economically self-sufficient. After all, the reason suburbia was created
was to get away from the city. In order to be fully detached from such a
place, a community needs to be able to take care of themselves. That was
the general philosophy behind the Greenbelt towns. By hiring thousands of
laborers, two goals were accomplished. First, it pulled approximately
thirteen thousand people out of unemployment. Second, it created an
attractive community that was able to stand on its own. Therefore,
construction of Greenbelt was an absolute success.
