Interpretations Of Suburbia
Today in 1996, this connection between obtaining material things and the
American Dream is still very strong. America has kept the materialistic
values which began after WWII for very different reasons than families
from the Depression. America today has become very
dependent on material things not because it has had to sacrifice but
because for many, those things define success and fulfillment.
At the same time, many express that it is unfortunate for two family
members to work full time in order to just live comfortably.
No one would deny that this is true however,
why has it developed in this way?
Since most would not be content as the early Greenbelt families
were,
has America expected too much from life?
Since many things that we now require were once considered luxury,
has it brought the current inflation upon itself?
Considering questions like these is important in order to understand
ourselves and our lives. Especially because there are many ways to
perceive life depending on the circumstances. As we have seen, Greenbelt
families considered this humble house very much their home. What are your
reactions to this modest life compared to your own? I hope that you
now have a deeper understanding for what I mean when I say,
"Welcome Home!"
