The pioneers of Greenbelt hardly were settled into their new town when war broke out. World War II brought an unanticipated building boom to Greenbelt. On the north end of town, as well as the south (pictured here), the federal government cleared more land and built more houses. Unlike the earlier brick and masonry homes, these later homes were of wood-frame construction, covered with shingles.
