"Life Is A Highway..."

By: Jennifer Bahou

In society, objects tend to reflect a person’s ideology; a set of values, ideas, behaviors, and assumptions. Objects are signs, which bring out significance (Maasik & Solomon). Objects help to describe or represent something or someone.

If I could choose any object to describe my college years, I would choose a highway. What does it look like? Who owns it? Who made it? What is its purpose? What makes it popular? Are the types of questions I ask myself when analyzing an object. A highway, is a useful tool used to get from one place to another. It is built by the government from the societies’ earnings. It is many roads connected together, which branch off into certain destinations.

Now, you may ask why I choose a highway, to reflect my college years. College to me is a useful tool to discover who I am and who I want to become. Also, colleges are built by the government from our earnings, through taxes. The roads on a highway symbolize the long list of majors available at any college. Highway roads are usually smooth, but at times it can become a bumpy ride. Like college, there are many tough times; from all-niters, cramming for exams, to writing 20-page papers.

If you take a wrong turn on the highway, it will not hurt you. Instead, it will benefit you. Then you are obligated to learn the area more, in order to find your way back to the major highway, which will lead you to your correct destination. In a sense, it will make you a better person. There are many majors to choose just one from. For many people that is a extremely hard decision. For me, I thought I wanted to become a computer scientist. So, I went in that direction and a year later realized that Computer Science was not for me. I found my way to what I believe is right for me; Decisions Information System (DIS). On the other hand, taking courses in computer science did not hurt me. On the contrary, they have helped me to become a more educated person. Depending on where you are going, the ride on a highway could be long or short. Resembling college careers, it depends on what you want to become. For me, it was a long ride; first I finished my four year BS degree in DIS and then I got my Masters degree in Finance.

I feel a highway best describes my adventures throughout my college years. Historians, namely Material Culturalist , examine ancient artifacts of the past, to better understand how society lived day to day. To Material Culturalist, my paper expresses the fact that college is not an easy ride; and there are many choices and opportunities along the way.
