MECHANICAL REFRIGERATION

The first mechanical refrigerators in the United States were produced in 1916 and included both gas and electric models.

The first electric compression refrigerators were produced by Westinghouse, General Motors (Frigidaire), General Electric, and American Motors (Kelvinator). Gas absorption models were produced by Servel.

In 1937,home refrigerators, advertised in national magazines and local newspapers, were almost within reach of the middle class (cost).

Today, refrigerators are available in a wide range of sizes and models and are found in most American homes, offices and dorm rooms.
