MECHANICAL REFRIGERATION
The first mechanical refrigerators in the United States were
produced in 1916 and included both gas
and electric models.
The first electric compression refrigerators were produced by Westinghouse, General
Motors (Frigidaire),
General Electric,
and American Motors (Kelvinator). Gas absorption models were produced by
Servel.
In 1937,home refrigerators, advertised in national magazines and local newspapers,
were almost within reach of the middle class (cost).
Today, refrigerators
are available in a wide range of sizes and models and are found in
most American homes, offices and dorm rooms.
