Food Preservation Before The Refrigerator

Prior to the invention of the mechanical refrigerator in 1916, food was stored in a number of ways including drying and canning.

Perishable food was also kept in ice houses or ice boxes supplied by ice that was collected from lakes and ponds, or manufactured in large blocks that were delivered to the home for use in ice boxes.
