They were married in Blue Island on Thursday, November 24, 1938. She took the name Virginia Mary Youngblood. He is the son of Henry Aurel and Eleanor (Quigley) Youngblood. She is the daughter of Edward Patrick and Clara Rose (Gaertner) Dougherty. They had two children:

Bernard was always known as Ben or Bennie. It was assumed that he was named for his grandfather, Benjamin Franklin.
