Mary Genevieve Gilbert

Mary Gilbert (30 hrs old) and Dad
(That's only a yawn)
I was born at 4:44 a.m. on September 12, 2000, in Philadelphia. They say I weigh just over ½ stone*. My parents are Truman John Gilbert and Paula Zyats. Three hours before I was born they were still at home wondering if it was really time to go to a birthing room at Pennsylvania Hospital.

From my perspective, my birth was very easy. After about two hours of being periodically squeezed, suddenly the door opened and there was all of this light. I slightly protested this abrupt change in climate but soon realized that my new freedom of motion was much better than my previous warm, wet, and snug environment. I understand that there was a misprint in the instruction manual; like the designers of Microsoft Windows, I thought I was supposed to lead with my butt instead of my head. Now I learn that that doesn't lead to the desired results. Fortunately, a skilled technical support staff was on hand to bail me out (so to speak). I heard that some guy named Caesar did it the same way.

By the way, the background for this page is my hair at about age 2. I think they should have named me "Penny".

*That's 7.1 pounds.
