Fifty (The Closer)

Music and Lyrics by Walter Gilbert

Below should be an image reminiscent of a tape player; its exact format will depent on what software your computer and your browser use. Click on what appears to be a "Play" button to hear the music. There also should be the other controls usually found on tape players.

Note that since this is not streaming audio, you will have to wait for the entire MP3 file to download before you can hear all of it. Therefore, if you are listening to it and it suddenly stops, the download is probably not complete.

Fifty (all voices)

Note: Lyrics in red are sung in parts: soprano, alto, tenor, and bass/baritone. Lyrics in green are two-part harmony, either men together and women together, or sopranos and tenors together and altos and basses together.

Oh, we are fifty,
    Yes, Hexagon's fifty;
We made it to fifty,
    Full two score and ten.
Yes, fifty,
    We'll take a bow, half a century now;
Fifty,
    And starting next year we'll do it all over again.

Fifty,
    We love it at fifty;
We're proud to be fifty,
    Four dozen and two.
Five decades we grew it,
    Threw ourselves into it,
But we only do it
    For you.

But as well as having fun,
    Each year we try to help someone:
        Cancer, Hospice, Heart care, House of Ruth.

Housing for Humanity,
    Boys and girls clubs of D. C.;
        Kiwanis, Food & Friends, Autistic Youth.

This is Hexagon, Fifty years of Hexagon;
    Long have we been a thorn in Washington.
This is Hexagon, Five decades of Hexagon;
    But, with our fifty years we've just begun.

(Tempo increases)
After all the fun we've had,
    Now's the time we are feelin' bad.
Fifty years and we still cry,
    When we have to
say "Good-bye".
On the bright side, never fear,
    We'll be back again next year.

Oh, oh, oh, oh --

Hex
agon,
    Another year come and gone.
Sad to know
    This brings an end to our show.

We are done,
    And we hope that ev'ryone
        Will come back for fun
            To show fifty-one.
